I have a fascination with astrology. It appeals to my interest in developing a holistic awareness of how the patterns of the world interact and manifest in various ways, big and small, depending on how we as humans grow or change. I’ve even taken classes! So I frequently think that it would be really fun to create flower essence combinations for the different astrological sun signs.
But then my analytical mind clicks in and I think that, sure, that might be great for someone struggling with Sun sign imbalances . . . but that’s not all that’s happening in your chart! In fact, it might not be what you need help with most at all.
For, example, Libra is BIG in my chart! I have three planets conjunct one another in Libra. Makes sense for someone who named her business Mama Love, right? Peace, love, harmony, art and beauty, the power of relationships, justice, healing communication (look at the url for this blog) . . . those are all strong motivators in my life. I care A LOT about these things, but I find that except for the need for balance and being aware of too many things when it comes to making decisions, this is typically far less of a problem than how this interacts with the fact that I have a Sagittarius Moon with Saturn sitting practically on top of it.
That conjunction means that my Libran desire for balance gets disrupted by Sagittarius’s emotionally driven desire to move and find the idealistically “perfect” place to move to, to travel, and to mix things up and create change . . . and then being squashed by the extreme confinement of being under Saturn’s thumb. Saturn is about structure and restriction, self-discipline, realistic expectations and groundedness. In a positive state of mind you could say that it helps you harness the value of staying in one place to take care of practical things and achieve long-term goals through focus and rootedness. And that’s the opposite of what Sagittarius wants to do.
Great feelings of frustration ensue if I let the desires of Sag overtake me but Saturn won’t let me go! And BIG problems with getting things done and having the financial resource and housing environment Libra demands occur if Sag gets her way and runs the show. Big, awful —damn, I wish I didn’t do that— problems! So then Saturn comes to the “rescue” and tries to put Sag under lock and key! And my inner Saturn can be quite the bitch! When she’s in control too long, my inner Sag throws a hissy fit about feeling at the mercy of an uber dictator and succumbing to the misery of its all work, no play, don’t go anywhere, and don’t do anything fun attitude. Sag HATES authoritarian dictators. And Libra HATES conflict, but these two aspects of my personality fight like cats and dogs!
When it comes to creating a flower essence mix for such a thing, you can’t just go by the Sun sign because you’d be missing the factors that make you go out of balance. So you need to believe you have the strength to integrate and resolve what seems like an extreme polarity and choose flower essences accordingly.
So let’s explore what I might do in my situation:
Sag says, “I want to move, to be free!” Saturn says: “Get stuff done. Attend to your life ‘correctly.’” And they’re both right! Sag just wants to have fun and throw away all limitations, and I NEED that inspired creative inspiration to balance Saturn’s tendency to be too straight-jacketing and harsh. But Saturn is also needed. It provides structure and grounding so a person can do what needs to be done to survive in what most people call “real” life. Saturn isn’t the “bad guy.” It just appears that way because of Sag’s tendency to want to overturn authoritarian dictators and lead people to more freedom, fair-mindedness and full-on enjoyment of being alive.
So what would go in a flower essence formula for this?
To balance Saturn, I think we want Zinnia flower essence. That’s for having a more playful, fun-loving attitude. And Zinnia really appeals to a belabored Sagittarius Moon.
But how do we integrate the healing qualities of Saturn? Somehow we need to combine the playfulness and idealistic creative inspiration of Sagittarius with the need to get up in the morning and go to work so you can pay the rent! So. . . how about intending joy and satisfaction in a grounded daily life? How about Blackberry flower essence which helps serve the desires of the heart—follow your Sagittarius dreams—through grounded focused Saturn-inspired action? That’s a great role for Saturn to play. Sag LIKES action and LOVES following their heart but HATES failure so engaging Saturn in the task of helping Sag succeed could be a win-win!
I’ll have to try this to see what happens. But one thing I do know is that the best way to skillfully work with astrological influences is NOT to vilify one and let the other run wild. If Saturn is sitting on your Sagittarius moon, it’s there for a reason. How can they work more effectively together for the good of the whole you?
