Let’s celebrate our planet by embracing the power of nature with aromatherapy. Essential oils are more than a pretty smell and therapeutic by-product of plants. In addition to promoting mind and body wellness, it serves a place in environmental sustainability.
How can you help contribute to eco-friendly, sustainable and conservation efforts to protect our planet?
Here are 8 ways you can upcycle aromatic bottles and containers!
- Recycle your glass essential oil bottles.
- Upcycle your glass essential oil bottles to make new aromatic blends for your diffuser. Clean them with hot water and soap. You may need to recycle the orifice reducer top and get a new one.
- Upcycle aromatherapy jars to plant seeds and allow them to germinate, before replanting them in a larger planter.
- Be mindful of wasting essential oils. If you buy them, use them. They go to waste by leaving them in your drawer. They have a shelf life and should be used with the year of purchase. Also, be mindful of how much you are using in your blends. More is not better and can actually exasperate s physical ailments or make someone more hypersensitive, emotionally.
- Use essential oil bottles to make crafts and gifts. Pinterest has a lot of great ideas if you search “essential oil bottle crafts”.
- Upcycle essential oil bottles to fill with individual string lights to create a fun atmosphere. Securely fasten the lights to the bottles. Clean them out very well and remove any essential oil residue as essential oils are flammable.
- Use empty and clean bottles as Christmas tree ornaments (I had one of my aromatherapy interns do this for me as a gift one year).
- Refill empty bottles with your favorite facial cleanser or moisturizer and use in your travel bag (instead of carrying larger sized bottles).
These are fun and creative ways you can use, preserve, and conserve the way you aromatherapy. Other tips to practice eco-friendly wellness are:
- Diffuser and use pure essential oils versus chemical based synthetic fragrances (which also affect your thyroid if you are using them as perfumes and colognes). Using non-electric diffusers is even better (see recipe below).
- Clean green to reduce chemical emissions.
- Carpool when you can to save fuel, but also give you company while you are traveling. this reduces feelings of loneliness.
Non-electric Diffuser Essential Oil Blend
In an 8-ounce jar or bowl, add 4-8 ounces of Epsom salt. Mix in the following oils, and let it sit on a countertop away form children and pets (so they don’t eat it).

3 drops of sweet orange Citrus sinensis) essential oil
2 drops of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil
