“The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.” — Mulan
Flowers that grow in adverse circumstances are frequently used as flower essences. There are a lot of them—flowers that grow in the desert (Prickly Pear, Desert Primrose), flowers that grow in rocky mountainous conditions with very little soil (Sierra Primrose). There are even flowers that pop up after natural disasters—like Fireweed that shows up in California after a forest fire.
I wouldn’t say they are the most beautiful flowers. But they have that effect because when you’re in a harsh environment and come across one of them, the immediate reaction is to respond with joy and excitement. “OMG, there’s a flower blooming here! How could anything grow in conditions like this?!!” I always have a sense of wonderment and curiosity. And then the thought: how could I be that resilient and joyous?
In some cases, you might want to use one of these flowers—that’s how!
For instance, I found myself drawn to Sierra Primrose recently. It’s for feeling grateful and joyous about life despite your daily challenges. I don’t live in great adversity. But, like most people, I do have stresses and things that worry me. I usually choose flower essences for reducing my worries and fears. But sometimes I want to focus on how I want to feel instead of on what I want relief from. Yes, I want relief from worry and stress, but I am still going to wake up every day in the same situation until I change it or the external pressures change. In the meantime, wouldn’t it be great to find a way to adapt and enjoy my life anyway? Or to find the faith and inner enthusiasm, joy and strength to persevere and thrive despite the challenges involved?
While they’re used for somewhat different purposes, that’s what I think all these flower essences have in common.
Prickly Pear helps you stay present with the challenges of the present moment. It creates a subtle yet wonderful feeling of stability and resilience along with, eventually, gratitude for the gifts you have.
Desert Primrose helps you counteract the ugliness of an adverse environment with your own creative artistry, beauty, and grace.
And Fireweed helps you find the strength, vitality, and sense of purpose to recreate your life again after a devastating disaster.
Use more than one together if you feel drawn to more than one.

Flower essences are used to assist with mind-body-spirit interactions and individual results may vary. They are extremely dilute which makes them quite safe. But because so little physical substance can be detected in a flower essence solution, these products are presumed to work on an energetic or vibrational level—something that cannot be adequately tested by western scientific methods. Claims made by me, therefore, are based on personal experiences and the evidence of the combined multiple decades of case notes by Dr. Edward Bach as well as Healing Herbs and Flower Essence Services (the companies who make the ingredients I use in my products). This is not, however, accepted medical evidence or substantiated scientific evidence from a modern allopathic point of view. I am not a medical doctor or licensed healthcare practitioner.
