There’s a lot going in the world that has people in great distress. So I get requests for Christmas gift suggestions (or any time gift ideas) for family members in the throes of overwhelm and despair about even being able to imagine that they can do anything. It seems hopeless. And working alone, sure, that would be the case. But seriously, we were never meant to take on the great troubles of the world on our own. Not now, not ever. And I actually do have suggestions for flower essences that can help!
It was my own struggles with depression about the state of the world and my despair about being able to do anything about it that led me to flower essences in the first place. I had actually given up and had decided that there wasn’t anything I could do except maybe make my own little patch of yard in Santa Cruz a nicer place. And then, I became completely obsessed with Scotch Broom. It grew wild in the hills of Santa Cruz and it was hated for being an invasive “weed” that not only was taking over the landscape but giving people horrible allergies.
But I didn’t know anything about that then—I just knew that I desperately wanted one at the entryway of my house so I could see it everyday when I went to work at a job I was emotionally done with and when I came back home. I didn’t know why—I just knew that I loved that plant! Unfortunately, my then husband was horribly allergic and I needed to bring it back to the nursery. But not before spending a fair bit of time smelling it and touching it and soaking up its essence. Not that I knew anything about flower essences at the time! But within a couple of weeks I knew that I wanted to go back to school for a degree in Transpersonal Psychology so I could learn a mind/body/spirit method of helping people with their difficulties. AND THEN I learned what Scotch Broom flower essence was for! I was thumbing through a pamphlet from the Flower Essence Society, thinking it was crazy crap I wanted nothing to do with, when I saw the words Scotch Broom and the description said it was for people who felt disheartened and depressed about the state of the world and their ability to do anything about it. The flower helps with optimism, faith, and finding the gifts you have to offer. Whoa! What?
I didn’t dive in right away but over time I realized that I always was attracted to the flowers that pamphlet later said I needed whenever I was feeling distressed. So I eventually took practitioner trainings and entered the world of flower essence consultation and product making as a side gig to other things I was called to do. And I will say this, there is nothing like feeling like you are able to make a difference at least in the part of the world you can touch and interact with to lift your despair and help you feel better. Especially when you meet other people doing what they can do to make things better, too! (I’ve had that experience many times!) So Scotch Broom is always my top pick for this particular issue.

Flower essences are used to assist with mind-body-spirit interactions and individual results may vary. They are extremely dilute which makes them quite safe. But because so little physical substance can be detected in a flower essence solution, these products are presumed to work on an energetic or vibrational level—something that cannot be adequately tested by western scientific methods. Claims made by me, therefore, are based on personal experiences and the evidence of the combined multiple decades of case notes by Dr. Edward Bach as well as Healing Herbs and Flower Essence Services (the companies who make the ingredients I use in my products). This is not, however, accepted medical evidence or substantiated scientific evidence from a modern allopathic point of view. I am not a medical doctor or licensed healthcare practitioner.
